Requiem

It had to happen sooner or later, my slow cooker died.  It was well over 20 years old.  It was time, I suppose.  All good things must come to an end.  I really liked this cooker.  It had a Corning ware casserole as the cooking pot.  It was removable and easily washable and comparatively light weight.  It made all manner of wonderful foods for me over the years.

This is lentil stew/ soup.  The recipe varies.  I am not a very exacting cook.  It is some lentils, maybe up to a cup.  A Polish sausage cut into coin slices.  Chopped cabbage, maybe half a head chopped / sliced.  Carrots and onion, chopped.  Something a little tomato-y, usually, a little spaghetti sauce or some stewed tomatoes (that would be optional, but I like a tomato taste).  I have added a can of mixed vegetables or leftover vegetables and anything else in the fridge that is a dab and seems like it might fit (but that is optional).

This is really good with corn bead.  If you have ham, you might use that instead of the sausage, but then, I would leave out the tomato.  I love recipes like this.  Anyway, dump it into the slow cooker and cook for several hours.

I have another slow cooker in the basement.  It is fancier and heavier.  I will have to break it out and teach it to cook lentils.  I looked online and I could replace the above slow cooker for $100, and I gave it a thought, but I think I will try the slow cooker I already have.  That price seems a little steep.  I will miss this old cooker though.  We were a good team for a lot of years.

A hundred dollars does seem like a lot. I have to replace mine soon too because the only setting that works is high. I find slow cookers VERY convenient and I tend to use them a few times a week during the winter. You can toss practically anything into those things and come out with a decent meal.
